Only about one hour by train (or car) from Rabat is the significantly better-known Casablanca. In Casablanca is the Mosque of Hassan the II, an absolutely massive mosque and the one with the world’s tallest Minaret (at 210m tall). the Hassan II Mosque is the largest in Morocco, and the 13th largest in the world, and up to 105,000 people can gather for prayer; 25,000 inside and 80,000 outside.
The mosque is not as old as one may initially assume, and construction was completed in 1993 after seven years of building. Part of the building is located over the Atlantic ocean, using a small rocky outcrop for support. To prevent the mosque from being eroded, two breakwaters also had to be built. A total of 10,000 artists and craftsmen were involved in building the mosque, and at the height of construction, 1,400 people worked during the day and 1,100 further at night. The total costs are estimated to have been around 585,000,000 Euros.
