Moving to Urubamba

My time in Lima was over, so now things would gradually start getting more serious. Although we still don’t have classes until Thursday, we will start working on social development projects with a local NGO and students from Urubamba tomorrow. Urubamba is the town we moved to yesterday – a town with around 2,700 residents which is about two hours (by car) away from Cusco. It is located at around 2,800m altitude, about 500m lower than Cusco, so we were all preparing ourselves to suffer from altitude sickness in the hours leading up to the flight.

The flight itself was not very calm – we flew with a small A320-200 by LATAM and over the Andes we encountered quite significant turbulence, which made the flight attendants cancel the on board-service half way through. I was sitting in the second half.

The landing in Cusco is spectacular – because of the thin air, the pilot has to approach the airport with quite high speed, and right before landing you turn to the left because there’s a mountain in the way – Cusco is located in a valley.

Then began our long road trip from Cusco to Urubamba, with many amazing landscapes to look at and a brief view of some parts of Cusco itself.

And then, finally, we arrived in Urubamba.
